PROTECT THE WATERS
Responsible sport fishing and catch-and-release
A practical introduction to fishing within local rules and handling fish with care. Gustavo Woltmann shares a practical perspective informed by engineering, travel and responsible recreational fishing.

THE FISHING ATLAS FIELD NOTES
Good preparation makes room for adventure.
The right equipment and local knowledge matter, but so do curiosity, safety and respect for the environments we visit. Follow these guides and use the world map to find destinations that fit your interests.

Understand licenses, closed waters, marine parks, possession limits, minimum sizes, gear restrictions and protected species before fishing.
Fish with suitable gear
Appropriate tackle reduces unnecessarily long fights. Use barbless or circle hooks when recommended for your target fishery.
Handle fish carefully
Wet hands, support the fish horizontally when appropriate, avoid rough surfaces and reduce air exposure. Large fish may be safest to unhook alongside the boat.
Release with care
Allow the fish to recover in suitable water and follow expert species-specific guidance. Releasing a fish is not a guarantee of survival.
Keep habitats healthy
Remove fishing line and litter, respect nesting and spawning areas, and avoid anchoring on sensitive coral.
Respect the sporting challenge
Engineering devices and digital tools must be used within both local law and the spirit of applicable sporting rules.
Confirm current local fishing laws and conservation rules. For international sporting guidance, read the IGFA International Angling Rules and the NOAA catch-and-release guidance.
