THE PERSON BEHIND THE ATLAS

Meet Gustavo Woltmann.

A Costa Rica–based retired business owner who brings engineering curiosity, IT experience and a spirit of adventure to recreational fishing.

Gustavo Woltmann

From business and engineering to the open water

Gustavo Woltmann, a 50-year-old retired business owner, made Costa Rica his home after stepping away from the day-to-day demands of business. The country’s magnificent coasts became a natural gateway to a different sort of work: learning the water, meeting fishing communities and building The Fishing Atlas.

Having spent years working with engineering problems and information technology, Gustavo looks at fishing with a mixture of practical discipline and enthusiasm. He enjoys understanding the forces behind a current, the useful limits of a sensor and the art of making a device simple enough to trust offshore.

Retirement did not mean standing still. Gustavo now spends months of each year traveling to distant fishing waters with friends and local guides, gathering ideas for destination guides and new ways of planning safe, enjoyable trips.

Technology is part of his tackle box

These concepts highlight Gustavo’s interest in practical tackle design, field observation and problem solving on the water.

He also uses modern fish-finding electronics, GPS, depth sounders and digital maps to understand conditions and choose a safe, legal approach. The goal is not to automate catching fish or gain an unfair advantage. Technology should support navigation, understanding conditions and good decisions while keeping the essential sporting challenge in the angler’s hands. Fishing regulations, protected areas, tournament rules and conservation requirements always come first.

The sporting principle

Tools can help you navigate and observe, but they should never replace the skill, restraint and responsibility required of a recreational angler.

Traveling with friends, learning from local guides

For Gustavo, great trips are built around people as much as scenery. He prefers to learn from guides who understand their waters intimately and to share the experience with friends rather than chase personal records at any cost.

That perspective is woven into every destination guide: useful techniques, respect for wildlife, practical travel planning and a dedicated adventure story that captures what makes the setting memorable.

This website was originally written by Gustavo in Spanish and later translated into multiple languages to help fellow anglers around the world learn more about fishing.
