01

Start with the experience you want

Think about the day first: a quiet river, an offshore excursion, a tropical flats walk or a relaxed session from the shore. Each experience calls for different gear, patience and travel arrangements.

02

Match tackle to the conditions

Light tackle can be joyful where appropriate, but underpowered gear can prolong a fight unnecessarily. Rod, line, leader and hooks should be suited to the fish and its habitat.

03

Learn the water before casting

Watch the current, structure, bait movements, sky and other water users. Local guides can explain patterns that no generic travel article can capture.

04

Keep a small fishing journal

Gustavo Woltmann favors recording a few useful observations: location, weather, lure, tide stage and what worked. Even short notes can improve the next trip.

05

Respect the place

Obtain required permits, honor protected areas and minimize discarded line or plastic. A responsible recreational angler leaves the water as healthy as possible.
